The suburb sits across two hillsides of a single gully, with the beach at the bottom of both.

Plenty of the cottages up on those hillsides have been knocked down and rebuilt bigger, but the drain run underneath usually stays exactly where the original builder left it.

That's the real issue. A hillside pipe is laid on a grade the flat streets never have to deal with, and grade changes what happens inside the pipe.

On the steepest sections, water moves through too quickly to carry solids all the way to the main. It drops what it's carrying wherever the pitch first eases off, and that's the spot that clogs.

Windblown sand off the beach settles in the same low points, so a joint that's already collecting silt from the grade picks up grit as well.

The worst of it turns up along Trafalgar Street and St Thomas Street, where the drop to the beach is sharpest. A blocked drain repair puts a failed joint right; a CCTV drain inspection tells us exactly where that joint is before anyone starts digging.

Murray Street and Gardyne Street run the same gully grade a little further back from the water, and the pattern holds: a hillside line silts at the same low points whether the house above it is original or a full knockdown-rebuild.

A tram ran down to the beach here from 1911 until 1960, and the housing boom that followed it set the pipe stock we still work on today.

Most of what went in the ground during that era was earthenware, laid to the standards of the day and never meant to last a century.

Knockdown-rebuilds change what's above ground, but the original drain run to the street is expensive to replace and often gets left alone.

That's the pipe our camera finds on plenty of these jobs: sound-looking from above, cracked and root-prone below.

Bronte Surf Life Saving Club has stood at the beach since 1903, and the streets around it were built out well before anyone thought about pipe access for a future repair.

Bronte House, the 1840s cottage above the gully, sits on some of the oldest developed ground in the suburb, a reminder of how long this land has had underground work done to it in layers.

Runoff off Calga Reserve and the residential streets above the beach follows the same downhill logic as everywhere else on the gully: it goes to the nearest low point, not necessarily the nearest drain built to take it.

The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk crosses the clifftop here between Tamarama and Clovelly, and properties along that exposed stretch cop the same salt air as the beachfront, which is what wears out an exposed gully grate years before its time.

Even a property near Bronte Public School, set back from the worst of the grade, still ties into a gully-fed stormwater line lower down, so a blockage two streets away can show up as slow drainage well before it reaches the main.
